During his illustrious career, H.E. Al-Attiyah has received a number of awards and honours including:
The Necklace of Independence, awarded by H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani for his salutary contribution towards Qatar’s commitment to transparency in business and governance and for his efforts towards the progress of the national economy.
The Grand Cross in the Order of the Orange Nassau, conferred by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Kingdom of Netherlands.
The Grand Cordon Order of the Rising Sun, awarded by His Imperial Majesty Emperor of Japan.
An honorary doctorate from Texas A&M University.
An honorary doctorate from the University of Torvergata, Italy.
The Career of His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah
His Excellency Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah was born in Qatar on December 5, 1952.
H.E. has over 40 years of experience in the energy industry.
H.E. started his career in 1972 with the Ministry of Finance and Petroleum of the State of Qatar. From 1973 to 1986, H.E. held the post of the Head of International and Public Relations at the ministry.
From 1986 to 1989, H.E. served as the Director of the Office of the Ministry of Interior and from 1989 to 1992 the Acting Minister of the Ministry of Finance and Petroleum.
In 1992, H.E. was appointed Minister of Energy & Industry and Charmain and Managing Director of Qatar Petroleum.
In 1993, H.E. was named OPEC president and a member of the OPEC's Quota Compliance Committee.
In 2003, H.E. was appointed Second Deputy Prime Minister and then elevated to Deputy Prime Minister four years later (2007).
H.E. was elected to Chairman of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development in 2006 and the President of 18th Session of UNFCCC Climate Change Conference (COP18) held in 2012.
In 2009, H.E. was elected as the Chairman of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
In 2011, H.E. was appointed as the Chief of the Amiri Diwan and President of the Qatar Administrative Control and Transparency Authority.
H.E has also served as Chairman of the Qatar Planning Commission.
In 2015, H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani and H.E. Al-Attiyah inaugurated the Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah International Foundation for Energy & Sustainable Development.
H.E. serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Al-Attiyah Foundation.
