Doha, Qatar – 26/02/25 – The Al-Attiyah Foundation played a central role in the second Global Innovation in Sustainability Summit (GISS), hosted by Qatar Academy Al Wakra (QAW), part of Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Pre-University Education. The summit brought together young minds from Qatar and around the world to explore innovative solutions for sustainable development.
As part of the summit, the Al-Attiyah Foundation, in collaboration with United Nations experts, hosted the opening session titled ‘Sustainable Development Goals and Energy Nexus.’ This critical discussion featured international experts Janos Pasztor, former Assistant Secretary for Climate Change at the United Nations; Ovais Sarmad, former Deputy Executive Secretary of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and UN Assistant Secretary-General; and Biplove Choudhary, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representative in Qatar.
The lively discussion explored the role of energy in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in education, health, and economic growth. The session highlighted the importance of equitable access to energy and examined the interdependence between energy and broader sustainability efforts. Furthermore, the experts provided insights on balancing development needs with environmental responsibility.
This year’s summit welcomed schools from 13 countries, along with 14 schools from Qatar, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and collaboration. Students delivered 13 live speeches, sharing their perspectives and ideas on sustainability challenges and the SDGs.
As part of the conference, 26 panel discussions and workshops were also held, led by experts from sustainability-focused companies. These sessions allowed students to interact with specialists, exchange ideas, and explore innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
