Environmental, social, and governance standards (ESG) have become the hallmark of socially responsible investors. Gone are the days when investors look solely at the potential profitability and financial risk when making an investment decision. Today, many investors and financial institutions consider it essential to align their portfolios with ESG performance, believing that companies that perform well on ESG are better positioned for the long term, and better prepared for risk and uncertainty.
However, adopting ESG principles comes with a set of challenges, from identifying the best reporting framework to use, to the lack of standards for measuring results or impact. These issues have slowed down progress. For example, while the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) signatory list includes 431 private equity firms from around the world, only 16 of them disclose ESG’s impact on financial returns, and only half use ESG principles in monitoring more than 90% of their portfolio companies, according to Institutional Investor.
