After the failure to reach a climate deal in Copenhagen in 2009, the usually slow and cumbersome international climate process gained some momentum, culminating in a landmark climate change Agreement in Paris in December 2015. The Paris Agreement is an ambitious and comprehensive agreement that provides many different approaches to allow all stakeholders to participate fully and effectively.
The backdrop for the dialogue is the increasing top-down/bottom-up climate action that we are witnessing globally. The top-down action by governments has increased in speed and scale over the past five years, with many countries making serious commitments, collectively and individually. The bottom-up action by the private sector and other stakeholders are outpacing the international process, on many fronts. Let’s look at the current state of play:
A little peep into what is happening:
We see more than 500 climate change laws in 60% of countries, covering 80% of global emissions.
We see large institutional investors diversifying into climate smart investments.
We see the green bond market growing exponentially, along with an understanding of climate-related risk.
We see increasing call for a stable and substantial global price on carbon.
Even large oil and gas companies now apply shadow pricing on carbon.
We see emission reporting increasing and improving, revealing where easy mitigation lies.
We are also seeing a gradual move towards carbon neutrality.
The Foundation is bringing three international climate experts from industry and government to share insights and facilitate a dialogue on recent trends and potential implications for businesses in Qatar.
The dialogue is a closed event and participation is by invitation only. Participants will include members of the board of trustees of the ABHA Foundation, including H.E. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah; Chairman to the board, Senior Government Officials, as well as Senior Management of Foundation Members. High-Level Representatives from Major Universities, Research Centres, Private Sector Organizations and Oil & Gas Company’s operating in Qatar will also be invited to attend.
