Professor Jonathan Stern

Distinguished Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies

In 2013, Professor Jonathan Stern established the Natural Gas Research Programme at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES). As Founder, Director, Chairman, Senior Research Fellow of the Natural Gas Research Programme, and now Distinguished Research Fellow at the OIES, he has had great impact on the development of postgraduate students who will become future energy leaders in their countries.

 

Professor Stern contributed to the OIES becoming a world leading independent energy research institute. OIES produces high quality, independent research and publishes landmark studies of topical energy issues concerning production, consumption, markets, policy, regulation, and the energy transition across the entire global energy economy.

 

His roles as Honorary Professor at the Centre for Energy Petroleum & Mineral Law & Policy at the University of Dundee; visiting Professor at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London; Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Energy Economics (IEEJ), Japan (in Tokyo) and; EU Speaker of the EU–Russia Gas Advisory Council further underline his great impact on students, politicians and professionals across the world.

 

Professor Stern is the author and editor of numerous books including: The Future of Russian Gas and Gazprom; Natural Gas in Asia: The Challenges of Growth in China, India, Japan and Korea; Natural Gas Markets in the Middle East and North Africa. Most recently, his published research has focused on greenhouse gas emissions from natural gas and LNG: Narratives for Natural Gas in Decarbonizing European Energy Markets; Challenges to the Future of LNG: decarbonisation, affordability and profitability; Methane Emissions from Natural Gas and LNG Imports: an increasingly urgent issue for the future of gas in Europe; Measurement, Reporting, and Verification of Methane Emissions from Natural Gas and LNG Trade: creating transparent and credible frameworks; and Greenhouse Gas Emissions from LNG Trade: from carbon neutral to GHG-verified.
