Doha: 20th of February 2025
On the 20th of February, global experts will convene to discuss the intersection of energy and sustainability, exploring critical trends and technologies shaping the energy landscape, at the Al-Attiyah Foundation’s first webinar of 2025, held in partnership with the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG).
The webinar, titled “The Role of Energy in Driving the Global Sustainability Agenda”, will feature presentations and panel discussions by renowned energy experts and thought leaders. Silvina Bruggia, Director, Sustainable Finance and Wealth, at the London Stock Exchange Group, will provide valuable insights on the pivotal role of energy in advancing global climate strategies. Lucy Yu, CEO and founder at Centre for Net Zero Octopus Energy, and Mahika Sri Krishna, Senior Research Analyst Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES), will also share their valuable expertise.
Key themes and discussion points set to be explored during the event include the role of innovation and advanced technologies in the energy transition, strategies for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation, shipping, and heavy industry, policies and regulations to promote energy efficiency and modernising power grids to accommodate renewable energy sources.
The need for this dialogue is underscored by pressing global statistics. According to the World Economic Forum, decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors will require $30 trillion in investments by 2050, while power grid upgrades essential to achieving a net-zero future will demand an estimated $21 trillion. Renewable energy capacity additions have accelerated, with 666 gigawatts (GW) projected in 2024—a 30% increase from 2023—yet these advances still fall short of targets from Conference of the Parties (COP).
In addition to the webinar, the Foundation will host its first quarterly CEO Roundtable of the year on 25 February 2025, titled “Balancing Economic Growth and Climate Action in the Energy Sector”. This high-level gathering will convene captains of industry, policymakers, and international experts to exchange views on policies and strategies for fostering economic growth while advancing climate commitments.
